Directions: Choose any two questions from Chapter 1 “Questions for Further Thought” on p. 20 of the textbook DSM-5 in Action, and choose an additional two questions from Chapter 2 “Questions for Further Thought on p. 67 of the textbook. In total, you will respond to four questions (two from Ch. 1, and two from Ch.2). Provide short answers of 100-150 words each for the following questions/statements. Do not exceed 200 words for your response. Use the textbook, and any other scholarly resources to support your responses. Include at least two to three peer-reviewed journal articles beyond the textbook and course readings.

Chapter One Questions Response
Is there a difference between the terms diagnosis and assessment? How would you define the diagnostic assessment, and what client-relevant factors are the most important to identify? Diagnosis and assessment are two terms common in mental disorder identification. However, these two terms have a different meaning when it comes to identifying a mental disorder. Diagnosis is the problem identification process (mental, social, and medical disorders) and the identification of the underlying causes of the problem while formulating its solution (Ahn & Kim, 2008). On the other hand, assessment is the process of determining the nature, cause, progression, and prognosis of a disorder and the situations or personalities involved (Sophia, 2015). In DSM-5 diagnosis, the combination approach is used in designing practice strategies by professionals. The combination approach is known as the diagnostic assessment, in which the foundation and objectives of counseling get established. A comprehensive diagnostic assessment assesses the personal and environmental factors that affect the client (American Pychiatric Association, 2013). This assists a therapist to gather mental health disorder data for the patient. Other client-relevant factors assessed include his culture, history, and background. It is crucial to identify the client’s belief system because this system affects and influences the problem interpretation process. Awareness of clients’ values, beliefs, and behaviors helps avoid any conflict from arising in the course of diagnostic assessment (Ahn & Kim, 2008).
