Preschool Promoting Literacy Discussion

Preschool Promoting Literacy Discussion

Instructions

  • What components make up the ideal preschool learning environment from a social and emotional perspective? What are some ways a professional may show empathy toward and acceptance of every child? Review the video “Morning Circle at Preschool” and discuss how the professional demonstrates acceptance while supporting language learning.
  • Design three learning centers in your ideal preschool learning environment that will show you are a professional committed to a multicultural approach. Tell why the three learning centers might stimulate positive attitudes and acceptance of others within the preschoolers.
  • Children who don’t develop empathy can become callous adults; oblivious to the hurt and pain they leave in their wake. Researchers say that empathy, like other emotions such as guilt, is not something that matures on its own—it must be learned. Give two examples of how you can teach and encourage children to learn empathy toward others. Select one book you might use to help children learn how to get along. What activities would you use in connection with the book?
  • Review the video “Indicators of a Quality Early Learning Environment.” Use the Learning Center Checklist (Figure 3.11) and reflect on how you might use this checklist to assess the arrangement of an early learning environment. How does a quality learning environment encourage language and literacy development?
