Using Non-Discriminatory Language
Portfolio Exercise 12: Is using non-discriminatory language merely ‘PC gone mad’?
We often hear people in the media complain of the problems of ‘political correctness gone mad’ when they are advised to take care with how they write or speak in relation to women, people with disabilities, issues of race or sexuality. Read some of the articles listed in the news items. Write a short piece that considers the following:
- What do people mean by the term ‘political correctness’?
- What are some of the arguments made by those who advocate no-discriminatory language?
- What are some of the arguments made by those who say ‘it’s PC gone mad’?
- How might language choices impact certain segments of society such as people with disabilities, LGBTQI or of differing ethnic origins?
