Professional Sport Teams Paper

Introduction

Social media are websites or applications that enable users to create or share content or participate in online networking. Thus social media can be used as a platform for promotion and marketing of products or in this case teams. This is possible through focusing on the following three key areas:

  1. Having a targeted social media strategy.
  2. The understanding of consumer behaviours.
  3. Making messages feel personal to the recipients.

From this, we are now able to compare and contrast between two professional sports teams and see on the different ways they use social media as a means of marketing the clubs and in the creation of a larger fan base. For this comparison, I picked two teams in the MLS football league the New York red bulls FC and the LA galaxy FC. These teams both have created social media accounts on various platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

Social media is useful to the New York red bulls for the attraction of fans from around the world and for the encouraging of the usage of other platforms. The team has around seven hundred thousand followers on Facebook and has also led to the increase in the number of people joining into their live streams and an increase in the purchasing of tickets to games which have been made available online and advertised using Facebook and twitter together with how to purchase them online.

As for the LA galaxy side, they use Facebook to ask questions to the fans on how better they can be engaged with the team’s activities and thus they come up with methods for benefitting the experience of the fans thus this creates a much larger fan base. They also post materials on a regular basis to keep the fans engaged.
