Objective:

Students will engage with and critically analyze the complexities of transgender and intersex issues as represented in documentary film. This assignment aims to foster empathy, encourage nuanced discussions, and deepen understanding of the social, political, and personal dimensions of these identities.

Watch by 10/16 – Reflection Due 10/18

Of the following documentaries about transgender experience, talk to each other so you each choose a different documentary to watch.:

    • Disclosure (2020) – Focuses on the representation of transgender individuals in media. (Netflix)
    • Born to Be (2019) – Follows the journey of a transgender surgeon and their patients. (Prime Free Trial or $3.99)
    • Paris is Burning (1990) – A vibrant portrayal of New York City’s drag ball culture and the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals in the 1980s (Max)
    • The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson (2017) – Investigates the life and legacy of a prominent transgender activist. (Netflix)
    • Will & Harper (2024) – Chronicles the experience and relationship of Will Ferrell and his close friend of 30 years, Harper Steele, who came out as a trans woman later in life (Netflix)

    Watch the selected documentary in its entirety. Take notes on key themes, personal stories, and any surprising or thought-provoking moments.
  2. Reflection Discussion Post Due 10/18:
    Write a reflection paper (about 500 words) that includes the following:

    • A brief summary of the documentary, including its main focus and any important figures highlighted.
    • Key themes and messages you identified in the film. How do these themes relate to broader societal discussions about gender identity?
    • Personal reflections on how the documentary challenged or reinforced your understanding of transgender issues. Did it evoke any emotional responses?
    • Consider the documentary’s impact: What do you think the filmmaker’s intention was? How effectively did they communicate their message?
