Contemporary Business Issues

Individual Essay Graded assignment 1: Individual essay, 2200 words, 60% of overall module mark

For this assignment you need to choose one of the two topics set out in the assignment brief in appendix 1.

To discuss your chosen topic you are required to research examples from contemporary business practice and make connections between analytical frameworks, models and theories that were covered in this module. The examples you use need to be the result of your own research and based on academic, practitioner, policy and news sources published in print or online. A good assignment will explore a small number of examples in depth, comparing and contrasting different sources, ideas and arguments on the issue you are exploring. A good assignment will also demonstrate wider reading that goes beyond reading material issued for this module and contain a justification of the data sources and research methods used. Simply presenting material from your search, without explaining why you believe it is relevant and how it helps to illustrate theoretical content covered in the module, is unlikely to contribute to a good grade. In particular we expect that:

  • The title for the assignment sets out the topic you are writing on.
  • • The assignment has a clear structure with headings and sub-headings.
  • • You refer to 15 – 25 different sources published online or in print.
  • • Your referencing style conforms to the Harvard Referencing guidelines published by CASE.
  • • There is a reference list at the end of your essay (this is excluded from the word count).
  • You explicitly draw on three of the six main topics that were covered in this module (globalisation, organisational culture, innovation and change, diversity, ethics and leadership).

Submissions that exceed the maximum limit of 2200 words by more than 10% will attract a penalty of 5 points deducted from the mark attained.

Graded assignment 2: Individual reflection, 800 words, 40% of overall module mark

This assignment is intended to develop your ability to critically reflect on your learning experience in relation to this module, to identify how your research and analytical skills were developed and what plans for the future development of research skills you might have. Be frank and specific in the way that you describe your previous level of research and analytical skills and use specific examples to illustrate how studying on this module has improved these. Such examples might relate to your work in the tutorial learning set, your discussions with the tutor during the ‘learning conversation’ and/or your individual research on your assignment.

You are also encouraged to consider how studying on this module might have developed your personal skills, such as time management or personal organisation, and how your attitudes and assumptions about learning might have changed. Try to look back on your experience of studying on this module and consider whether you have developed new perspectives on management practice and how this, together with changes in your skill set, might assist you in future.
