You have been appointed as a supply chain consultant to a major manufacturer of consumer electronic goods, based in the Netherlands. The company is developing a revolutionary new games console to replace their existing, market leading model, which they expect to sell in large numbers around the world. You have been asked to produce a report for the board of directors, recommending a suitable strategy for transporting the consoles from the factory to retail outlets on all continents. The product life-cycle of the console is expected to be around two years, with huge demand during the introduction phase followed by a period of stability and culminating in a steady decline of sales prior to the introduction of a replacement model. The industry has sometimes struggled to meet the global demand for newly launched models in the past and the company is well-aware of this and seeks to avoid a repeat of any such issues with this new model. However, costs should be kept to a minimum wherever possible, whilst still maintaining acceptable levels of customer service. Although all relevant factors may be considered in your report, the directors are especially keen that you:
- Provide recommendations for the main modes of transport used for the primary distribution of the consoles from the factory to distributors in North and South America, Asia, Europe and Africa.
- Devise an appropriate method (or methods) of forecasting demand for the console, both prior to launch and throughout its life-cycle.
- Evaluate the suitability of both lean and agile supply chain strategies throughout the product life-cycle.
- Suggest ways in which value may be added for the customer through supply chain functions.

All recommendations and comments, must be fully justified. Your report should be 2000 words in length. You should include relevant references within your work, from suitable, published sources. The course workbooks are not considered to be an appropriate source of reference. Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA) 1
