Aquaculture Company Harvest Road
The aquaculture company Harvest Road Group has recently acquired the oyster farm in Oyster Harbour near Albany, and is expanding its operations in the area. Oyster Harbour is estuarine, and is characterised by seasonal fluctuations in salinity and temperature. Incoming rivers (King and Kalgan) are responsible for increased input of fresher water in winter months. These agriculture-dominated catchments are also responsible for nutrient enrichment of the harbour. In addition to growing the Sydney rock oyster, the company also plans to grow the pearl akoya oyster for eating. The company has secured lease areas within the harbour, and grow oysters on longlines in this area. They are interested in finding out if growth rates and condition index of oysters differ if grown in different parts of the lease area. The northern part of their lease area is near the outlet of the Kalgan River, whilst the southern part of the lease area is closest to the entrance to King George Sound.
Firstly, you need to establish the ‘research problem’. When you write the Introduction section of your paper, you will have to outline why the research is needed, and what the purpose (aim) is of your study in terms of addressing research knowledge gaps. In your writing, you will have to make sure that the research problem is clearly articulated and adequately focused. The main issue being addressed here is whether growth rates and condition of oysters differ depending in which part of the lease area they are grown in.
