Argumentative Essay 1 Assignment

Please choose from one of the following topics for your argumentative paper:

Develop an argument about some element of modern electronic technology on people’s learning/ life. [See “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” in Content tab, “World and Screen” by Nicholas Carr (pages 889-898), “To Siri, with Love” by Judith Newman (pages 1017-1024), and/or “Mind over Mass Media” by Stephen Pinker (pages 1029-1031)]

Develop an argument about the food industry or food products and/or American food consumption [See “A Food Policy Could Save Lives” by Bittman, M., et al (868-875), “How Junk Food Can End Obesity” by David Freedman (931-950) and/or “Why McDonald’s Fries Taste So Good” by Eric Schlosser (1051-1064)].

Develop an argument about a chosen or proscribed identity of a person. [See “The Talk: After Ferguson…” by Dana Canedy (pages 884-887), “On Becoming a Sports Fan” by Andy Hinds (pages 963- 967), and/or “The Logic of Stupid Poor People” by Tressie McMillan Cottom (pages 1011-1015)]

Develop an argument about modern work in the U.S. [ See “Serving in Florida” by Barbara Ehrenreich (pages 917-930), “On the Minimum Wage Debate” by Rex Huppke (pages 146-149), “Clean Sweep” by Ryan Kohls (pages 976-980), and/or “The ‘Busy Trap’” by Tim Kreider (pages 982-985)]

Develop an argument about college education in the U.S. [ See “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff (pages 957-962), “On Meaningful Observation” by John Maeda (pages 987-990), and/or “Why Colleges Shower Their Students with A’s’” by Brent Staples (pages 1065-1067).

Note: I strongly recommend that you read one essay that you identify with over the next few days and then formulate an idea that argues a point based on an author’s argument re: the topic. In addition, you can read other essays in the book or on the Tumblr site associated with the book, if you wish.

  • Your essay can only be written in the 3rd person throughout!
  • The essay should include quotes from at least one, but no more than two (2), of the essays from the book that I have provided after the topic. You will not do any additional outside research for this essay. Note: Any outside research included in the essay will be considered plagiarism and the essay will be given a zero.
  • Your thesis should argue about something you believe re: the topic you have chosen to write about. Argument Essay 1 Assignment
  • Be sure and attribute AT LEAST two logically thought out reasons to support your chosen argument about the
  • This essay must include AT LEAST 3 but no more than 5 direct quotes from any of the essays that I have included next to each topic and a works cited page that cites the textbook.
  • In addition, the quotes must not be more than three lines in length. Also, the quotes need to have quotations around them and should be introduced with a signal phrase of some sort (see strong body paragraphs document in content page).

The paper should be 4-5 pages/ 1200-1400 words, be MLA formatted, and in Times New Roman, 12 point font. The Thesis Statement and first paragraph is due Oct 16th, 2019 by the end of class. The Rough draft is due Oct 23rd, 2019 at the beginning of the class and is worth 6 HW grades AND must be at least 3 FULL pages in length and typed or you will receive a zero. The Final draft is due Oct 30th, 2019 by the beginning of class and must be placed in the drop box under the Assessments tab for full credit.
