Course Description (Catalog)

Business Logistics is the set of activities involved in the flow of materials and products through an organization and through the supply chain to the market. This course examines and applies management tools and principles to these supply and distribution problems. Emphasis is first placed on developing a broad overview of the logistics field: what are its principle activities, decisions and how these activities produce value by supplying customer service through order fulfillment. Inter-functional coordination is reviewed by examining how logistics is coordinated or integrated with marketing and corporate strategy. Next, a thorough grounding in concepts, alternatives and tools for the primary activities of logistics: inventory, transportation, warehousing and order processing are presented. This
provides the basis for examining issues in logistics system design, including stock location, sourcing, number and location of facilities and flow management.

Course Scope:

As today’s business climate continues to stay hostile and difficult, it is essential that companies learn how to utilize and maximize their resources. While saving a few percentage points per freight charge might seem insignificant per shipment, imagine how these saving would impact the bottom line for large companies like Ford, USX, or Cargill. Imagine also, if these few percentage points were an increase –those extra costs would translate to millions of dollars of increased burden on the bottom line.

There is less room for error in today’s marketplace; the offices of headhunters and out-placement services are filled with those individuals who could not – or would not – adapt to today’s intense pace and climate.

Course Objectives:

This course will explore the basic principles of business logistics. The student will learn these fundamentals, learn to apply the relevant and appropriate terminology, as well as utilize this knowledge through the application and analysis of case studies and current events. The student will be challenged to evaluate and re-assess their knowledge levels of the different factors influencing Business Logistics. Assignments will include case studies and discussion topics.
