Case: Hypothesis Examination Methods

Throughout this course, we have examined methods for developing hypotheses based on information gathered from different sources. For your final assignment, please complete the following.

Case Study

This case study focuses on the murder of Mayvette Monzon on September 23, 2005. The case remains unsolved. Your task is to use open sources to investigate the case and to complete the analytic and written work detailed in the requirements section below.

A good starting point for your research would be to review the VPD Cold Case website, providing a Case Overview, Media Stories, Locations of Interest, and Case Photos: https://www.vpdcoldcases.ca/mayvette-monzon/photos/

You are responsible for finding and thinking critically about additional sources on the issue.

Requirements

  1. Brainstorm about the issue. You can record your brainstorming on paper in legible handwriting or on computer. If you are using paper, please photograph your work or scan it in, then turn it into a pdf file.
  2. Conduct an Analysis of Competing Hypotheses on the Monzon case. Your ACH matrix should include at least 3 hypotheses about who killed Mayvette Monzon, and at least 25 pieces of evidence/deductions.
  3. Create a Word document. The first page should contain a relevant title and all group members’ names. The remainder should provide answers to the following questions:
  • What are your 3 main analytic findings about who killed Mayvette Monzon (Present these findings in BLUF and make sure you briefly discuss the reasons for)
  • Explain your level of confidence in your analytic Include WEP’s and a percentage that matches your word of estimative probability
  • Based on your open source research, what are the major intelligence gaps in the Monzon case? Which collection method(s) could help fill each of these gaps? Explain
  • List the sources you consulted during your (Use APA format and ensure that all hyperlinks function.)
  • Of the sources you consulted, which 2 do you consider the most reliable? Why?
  • Of the sources you consulted, which 2 do you consider the least reliable? Why?.
  1. Package your various files (containing your brainstorming, ACH matrix, and case study questions) into a single zip file and submit it through the Blackboard Assignments area. In the “Notes to Instructor” field, provide your group members’ names.
