Dispositions Related to Cultural Competence | Description of How the Disposition is Met |
1. Amiability | Throughout my training as a counselor, it has been clear to me that a successful counselor must be non-discriminative against clients. I do not engage or support any act of bias, prejudice, or discrimination against clients regardless of their culture and beliefs. According to (Walz & Bleur, 2010), a successful therapist endeavors to practice and promote social justice among his or clients in a manner that is free of bias and that upholds and values all cultures as equal. When attending diverse clients, I do not exploit them rather I treat them equal and as humans, this has helped me in building strong counseling relationships. |
2. Acceptance | |
3. Self-Awareness |
Directions: Now that you have identified dispositions that you currently meet, review the disposition document again and select two dispositions related to cultural competence that may be areas of improvement. Complete the chart below by adding the two dispositions you do not meet as well as a preliminary plan in regards to how you plan to improve the identified dispositions. Each description response should be 75-100 words in length.
Disposition | Description of How you plan to Improve the Disposition |
1. Genuineness | One area of improvement is on the disposition of genuineness. In my practice, I have found this principle difficult to apply due to the fear that disclosure of cultural backgrounds would sway away potential clients (Walz & Bleur, 2010). But on learning that successful therapy is built on truth, honest, and genuineness, I endeavor to have a change in mindset and uphold genuineness as an action to avoid harming diverse clients. To achieve this, I would disclose all my professional competence to clients before commencing therapy and also create an open environment where clients freely express themselves. |
2. Empathy |
