Discussion Board: Emotions & Culture
What is the significance of distinguishing between feelings, moods and emotions? What steps do you ordinarily take to deal with a bad mood? Do you think a person’s family of origin affects how feelings, moods, and emotions are managed? What examples can you provide?
Discussion Board: Cultural Differences
Recall the textbooks’ discussion of cultural differences in nonverbal communication. For example, Cambodians see direct eye contact as an invasion of privacy, and Iranians stand relatively close to conversational partners. What experiences have you had where you have noticed these cultural differences in nonverbal codes?
A few things to keep in mind as you respond to this discussion:
- Being culturally different doesn’t mean speaking with an accent and eating strange foods—-or does it? Remember there are eight nonverbal communication codes discussed in the text!
- Words hurt. The culture you may be describing, may be the culture of one of your classmates. We are all different, not wrong. There is a difference.
- If you decide you do not know anyone culturally different from you, that is either the saddest thing I have ever heard, or you didn’t think about the question long enough!
