EGL1010 Final Essay Assignment

In this course, you worked through the steps in the writing process. This assignment will ask you to reflect on your progress in the course and ask you to demonstrate your knowledge of the writing process.

Directions: Choose ONE of the prompts below to answer for your final in-class essay.  Be sure to present your point(s) in a clear thesis statement, support it with sufficient specifics and details, and conclude appropriately. Proofread your essay to be sure that all sentences are complete, clear and correct without major grammatical errors.  The essay must be 500-700 words in length and properly formatted.

The essay must consist of three to five paragraphs, including an introduction and conclusion.

The essay should not include the use of outside sources aside from your own work this semester.

  1. Often hindsight is 20/20, and we look back saying, “If I had only known…” or “I wish someone had told me…” If you had to advise a student who is taking this class next semester, what would you tell him/her is most crucial to succeeding in the course? What are your top rules/pieces of advice? Is there anything you are especially proud of? Is there anything you would do differently if you could start the class over? How should the student go about following each of them, or how you should have taken your own advice. (For this choice AND THIS CHOICE ONLY, second person may be used.)
  2. Taking into consideration our entire semester’s journey together, what changes might you implement going forward as a student and/or as a writer? Are there skills you learned in this class that will help you in your remaining classes and/or in your career? Use the following as a guide:

  1. What did you expect from this course? Did the class meet your expectations? What was the most valuable thing you learned this semester? What was the least valuable?  Was there anything you disliked but from which your learned something? These can be content-related, or they can be things you learned about yourself or your abilities as the semester progressed.  Why was each thing valuable or not valuable?  What one change would most improve this course?
  2. Compare/contrast your writing skills now with your writing skills at the beginning of the semester. How confident were you in your writing abilities at the beginning of this course? How do you feel now that you have a better understanding of the writing process? You may use any of the assignments you’ve completed throughout the semester to clarify your point or for specific points of comparison. Explain why your feelings did or did not change.
  3. How well have you met the requirements of the class? Based on your assessment of your overall performance in the course and the grades you have received on writing assignments, what grade do you think you have earned for the course? Provide reasons to support your receiving that particular grade.
