Family Counseling: Pros and Cons of Consultation

  1. What are the pros and cons of insisting that the entire family attend the initial consultation? What would you do if you learned that some of the family members refused to engage in therapy stating that the presenting problem, a recent traumatic event, did not negatively impact them?
  2. Create a list of suggestions for cutting down on the no-show and cancellation rates of families scheduled for therapy. Which items on your list would you be comfortable instituting and why?
  3. What would you do if you were providing a psychological test to a counseling client and an issue arose in which your personal ethics were in conflict with the established state and/or federal laws and/or codes of ethics? Provide an example to support your response.
  4. What serious ethical violation could occur if a counselor administered a psychological test incorrectly or without considering multicultural factors? Identify the ACA Code of Ethics statements that apply in this scenario.
