Alternative to Assignment 1 – Harassment and Discrimination
The ethical expectation in business is a crucial topic of discussion. Globalization has exponentially developed in the current business world, prompting people from different backgrounds to integrate skills and talents for maximum productivity. While it is a broad topic, I think narrowing it down to discuss the significant issues in this topic is a viable alternative. In this regard, I chose ‘harassment and discrimination,’ which is arguably the most important ethical issue impacting business owners. Discrimination is expressed through harassment whereby a supervisor or co-worker intimidates or creates a hostile working environment (Roscigno, 2019).
While people uphold different values, learning the negative impacts of harassment and discrimination is vital to enable me to understand the strategies to embrace different people. Further, other factors such as age differences could influence harassment and discrimination. Learning the skills to work with people of different ages is vital to avoid unnecessary conflicts (Roscigno, 2019). Older people may have more work experience than young people and hence a need for mutual understanding as they learn the skills from older individuals.
On the other hand, young people may have more technological skills than older employees. Hence, the topic enables one to realize the ways in which to utilize the skills in the workplace while safeguarding the place for the analog employees. The subject of discrimination and its impacts on the workplace will also equip me with the skills to cope well with employees with disabilities. Accommodations and equal treatment regarding employees with mental and physical employees is vital to encourage them to explore their talents in a conducive environment (Roscigno, 2019). Generally, when harassment and discrimination dominate a work environment, the results could be catastrophic, devaluing organizational finances and reputation.
Alternative for Assignment 3 – Utilitarianism
Utilitarianism is a powerful and crucial approach to normative ethics in philosophy. The approach, which is extensively discerned through the history of ethical theory, advocates for the actions that foster pleasure or happiness to other individuals while opposing those that cause harm or unhappiness (Becker, et al., 2016). In other words, the approach aims for the betterment of the whole society. Doing good to other people exhibits self-gratification instead of evil, which cultivates feelings of guiltiness and sorrowfulness (Häyry, 2021). Based on utilitarianism, an action is right if it results in the majority of people’s happiness in a group or society.
Additionally, utilitarianism would enable the learners to focus on happiness as a society. Happiness posits as a significant reason why people exist. In this regard, learning the concept of utilitarianism would enhance the moral values of the class by focusing on promoting others’ happiness, hence their well-being (Häyry, 2021). In other words, it will help the class to embrace the measures that enhance the happiness of their colleagues while avoiding those that impose sadness. With this knowledge, we would realize that harming other people is immoral and an evil approach to avoid.
Further, learning utilitarianism theory helps to shape the character and virtues of an individual. The theory focuses on humanity in the context of spirituality (Becker, et al., 2016). People hold different spiritual beliefs, and pinning down a person based on this virtue would be demeaning. In this regard, embracing utilitarianism would enable people to avoid inconsistencies when focusing on a supernatural deity based on an individual perspective (Häyry, 2021). In other words, it will be easier or possible to embrace others’ differences while maintaining peace and harmony in society.
Alternative to Assignment 6 – Technology and Privacy Practices
The continued developments in technological security capability initiate privacy threats for employees and clients. Employers have increasingly gained the ability to monitor the employees’ activities on their computers and other devices. Albeit electronic surveillance is meant to improve productivity and efficiency, it dangerously poises as a privacy violation tool (Mohamed et al., 2021). Such deprives the employees of their freedom and privacy rights, which could negatively affect their motivation to produce results. Besides, privacy violations could demean the ego of the employees, hence decreasing productivity. In this regard, learning the concept of technology and privacy practices is vital to unleashing the measures that could be implemented to eliminate this potential threat to employees.
Further, the critical focus of surveillance is to enhance transparency. To avoid resultant ethical issues in regard to this technology, the employees and employers should be conscious of the actual benefits of surveillance and whether it is the most helpful approach to develop a record of job performance (Mohamed et al., 2021). Learning this topic in class broadens the students’ minds to assess the benefits versus the harm prompted by technological surveillance. Besides, technology is constantly evolving, and keeping the topic at bay ensures that students embrace the strategies with the most benefits while protecting necessary rights to employees and business partners.
Generally, as businesses embrace the evolving technology for its enormous benefits, rules and regulations are vital in upholding privacy and ethical codes. In any case, human beings respect their space, and hence, privacy should be protected even at the height of technological development. In this regard, the concept of technology and privacy practices should be emphasized in the class so that students embrace the essence of utilizing technology appropriately.
