INP605: Management Practicum Learning

Learning Outcomes:

This assessment addresses the following subject learning outcomes:

  • Identify & illustrate key performance competencies for success in the industry
  • Critically evaluate the operations of a hospitality, events or tourism organisation from a management perspective
  • Assess and compare the differences of employability trends in a global context
  • Evaluate and implement strategies for personal & professional action planning.
  • Analyse the value of interrelationships between various internal stakeholders to achieve strategic business objectives.

Instructions:

Part A: Reflective Essay (2,500 words)- Weighting: 25%

  • To fulfil Part (A) you are to construct a reflective essay that addresses the following key points;
  • A brief overview of your organization and position.
  • Your performance as it relates to securing your placement, particularly the preparation, application and selection process.
  • Critical evaluation your induction and training processes into the organization and related department.
  • Identification and comparison of your department’s operating objectives and their alignment with the organization’s overall objectives. Critique of the overall performance concerning departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Recommendations for improvement of the recruitment, induction and training process of the organization.

Part B: Report (2,500 words)- Weighting: 25%

To fulfill Part B, you must construct a report that addresses the following key points:

1. Critically analyse how your department’s internal and external stakeholders contribute toward the department and hotel’s objectives. Draw conclusions from your experience and rely upon academic sources to explain and justify the importance of these relationships.

2. As an internal stakeholder, critically reflect on your performance and contribution toward the department and hotel’s objectives. Consider the following in your response:

  • Your key strengths;
  • Areas of overall performance that could be improved;
  • How your placement has contributed to your leadership behavior
  • A justification of your long term (three to five year) career goals and your strategy to achieve them

 

Submission Instructions:

Written Assessment Part A

  • Typed in essay format (refer to Academic Writing Guide: APA 6th Edition on SharePoint) and to be submitted in electronic form as a Word document to Turnitin: www.turnitin.com
  • Turnitin submission details can be accessed on SharePoint under Teaching and Learning
  • An individual assessment cover sheet is to be included (found on SharePoint under Teaching and Learning)
  • This assessment is a personal reflection on the workplace. Therefore, it is not essential to incorporate academic secondary sources (references).

Written Assessment Part B

  • Typed in report format (refer to Academic Writing Guide: APA 6th Edition on SharePoint) and to be submitted in electronic form as a Word document to Turnitin: www.turnitin.com
  • Turnitin submission details can be accessed on SharePoint under Teaching and Learning
  • An individual assessment cover sheet is to be included (found on SharePoint under Teaching and Learning)
  • Students must refer, in text, to academic and professional articles, plus others as required, in order to show competency in this assessment. A reasonable number for a Master’s program would be 12 credible references linking practical experience to theory.

Mid-term Proof of Hours (minimum 240 hours): Weighting 15% (See due date below)

  • Students must submit the required number of hours to be awarded the 15% weighting, otherwise this component will result in a zero grade
  • Complete Proof of Hours Template (found on SharePoint under INP605) showing hours worked each pay period to date, with total at the bottom or obtain a letter from your Human Resources department (or manager) that identifies the total amount of hours completed to date.
  • Must submit template with all company pay slips as supporting documentation

Total Proof of Hours (minimum 600 hours): Weighting 35% (See due date below)

Student must provide evidence of the total hours worked throughout the entire industry placement, in a relevant approved position with an approved employer to be awarded the 35% weighting, otherwise this component will result in a zero grade. The requirement is a minimum 600 hours over a minimum of 24 weeks.

There are two ways of providing this evidence:

OPTION 1 – Written Statement from Employer

  • Must be on company letterhead, showing company name and address
  • Must show your name, position, and total hours worked
  • Must show your start date and finish date (hours worked outside of these dates will not count)
  • Must be in Word or PDF Format

OPTION 2 – Proof of Hours Template AND Pay Slips

  • Complete Proof of Hours Template (found on SharePoint under INP605) showing hours worked each pay period, with total at the bottom.
  • Must submit template with all company pay slips as supporting documentation
  • Submission: attach template and all pay slips to an email.

Please note there is no excuse for not submitting your Proof of Hours. If your company cannot assist you with a letter proving your hours, you can still submit the Proof of Hours Template and your pay slips, as described above.
