Introduction to Strategy Assessment

Detailed Task: Telstra Corporation Limited (TCL) is an Australian telecommunication company. TCL builds and operates telecommunications networks and markets mobile, internet access, voice, pay television and many other products. To expand its market share and grow its bottom line, this year, the TCL has decided to relocate its Headquarters and centre of its operations to other parts of Asia and has settled on Hong Kong as its new home. However, due to political upheavals that have rocked Hong Kong in the recent past, TCL is now considering three other locations: Mainland China, Vietnam or Malaysia.

You are required to choose ONE of these countries, and write a report identifying key strategic issues that will confront TCL and give clear strategic recommendations that TCL will need to adopt to excel. In preparing your report, you are required to link your arguments to the course content, and to use relevant data to support your suggestion as to why the selected country would be appropriate (or inappropriate) for all of TCL operations. In particular, the use of PESTEL, Porter’s Five Forces, VRIO and SWOT analysis are required for this assessment task. Please Note: TCL operations relocation is purely hypothetical, but TCL is a real company with its key statistics and key information easily available. Also, the relevant information may be collected from annual reports or other published articles such as those available from 07/04/2020 (Autumn 2020) © University of Technology Sydney Page 6 of 11 may be collected from annual reports or other published articles such as those available from the library electronic database, as well as other media.

The purpose of this assessment is to analyse the potential of the country as a potential market for hosting (macro-level analysis), and critical internal resources required to succeed in a foreign market. Also, industry level information (telecommunications) and comprehensive internal and industry analysis will also be required in the report. Importantly, the report will be expected to include strategic issues with the potential to impact TCL and detailed recommendations on how TCL can navigate through these issues.
