Assignment Questions
- Is there an ethical dilemma; Carefully outline your comments and give consideration to the whole situation (When considering your response refer to Ethical Analysis and Decision Making Process – helpfu documents are on lms)
- Conduct an Ethical and Decision Making exercise by answering the following questions:
Step 1 Understand the Situation
- List and number the relevant facts (List all relevant facts as simple, objective short statements (no judgments here) – we are
answering the question “What is it all about?”) - Which of these raise an ethical issue? What is the potential or resulting harm? (This is NOT where we do a complete ethical
analysis – we are trying to isolate the issue(s) that need to be dealt with now.)
List the stakeholders involved (This helps to determine who is affected)
- Step II Isolate the Major Ethical Dilemma (What ethical issue needs to be resolved NOW? Just state the immediate dilemma. State it in the form “Should someone (or some organisation or some management) do or not do something?”)
- Step III Ethical Analysis Apply ethical principles to the ethical issue (consider at least Consequentialism, Rights and Duties (Deontology) and Kant’s Categorical Imperative). This can be done in more of an essay style or you can follow the questions as provided the Ethical Tutorial on lms)
Consequentialism:
- If action in Step II is done, who will be harmed?
- If action in Step II is NOT done who will be harmed?
- Which alternative results in the least harm?
- If action in Step II is done, who will benefit?
- If action in Step II is NOT done, who will benefit?
- Which alternative results in the maximum benefit?
Consequentialism Comments (on the choices at 3 and 6) You need to comment on the choices that you made in C and F above and if there is/appears to be any apparent conflict between those harmed and those that benefit.
Rights and Duties:
- List relevant abridged (i.e. ignored) rights and neglected duties.
- Rights and Duties Comments:
- Make summary comments on your observations withrespect to (any) abridged – ( that is, ignored) rights and duties that you have identified above.
Kant’s Categorical Imperative:
- If action in Step II is done, who will be treated with disrespect?
- If action in Step II is NOT done, who will be treated with disrespect?
- Which alternative is preferable?
- If action in Step II is done, who will be treated unlike others?
- If action in Step II is NOT done, who will be treated unlike others?
- Which alternative is preferable?
- Are there benefits if everyone did action in Step II?
- Are there benefits if nobody did action in Step II?
- Which alternative is preferable?
Discussion
As there is usually some conflict between the observed or assessed ”treatment of others” in categorical imperative you will need to discuss and indicate which is the preferable alternate and why – essentially which alternative you give a “greater weight to!” Step IV Making a decision. Make a defensible ethical decision.
Should be a simple “action” type decision/statement that does address the major dilemma in the given scenario. List the steps needed to implement your defensible ethical decision.
Typically, a number of steps will have to be done here that will ensure that your decision is executed/implemented. Care that your instructions don’t cause either.
