Purpose
Workplace Lateral Violence Incivility is something we deal with at the workplace. There are the micro-aggressions visible at report–the coming on nurse questioning every decision made by the leaving nurse; the nurse who always has to be the smartest person in the room, and does it by belittling others.
Two examples from my life:
- A colleague mumbled under her breath “You always leave stuff for our shift.” The person giving report berated the person in public for all to hear. Both were wrong. Both had opportunity to de-escalate. Neither did. Those of us around (me included) sat there dumbfounded and did nothing to stop it. It bothers me to this day that I did not step in.
- As a clinical instructor, I overheard the charge nurse laughing with another while making assignments. Another nurse stood up in disgust and walked out. I asked her what was going on. The charge nurse and her friend were giving an older nurse patient at both ends of the hallway so she would have to walk more during the shift.
Initial Post
- This week, step back in time to watch another pair at hand-off or the whole staff in a huddle. What are they telling each other with their bodies?
- Now, look at how you are holding yourself. Is there something you would encourage someone to change to make the experience more collegial?
- If you are not currently in a clinical setting, use the scenario in this video.
- Start watching at 2:45 to about 7:00 for the scenarios though, the whole video is very informative!.
- This video can also be found in additional resources.
- Use the ANA statement OR the Hallmarks in your discussion.

Overview
Glove use has changed dramatically over the years. As a nurse in the early 1980s, we rarely used gloves. As a nurse caring for AIDS patients in the 1990s we would deliberately remove our gloves after caregiving to touch our patients as many lacked human contact. Today you will find many health care workers apply gloves every time entering a room. How much of glove use is preventing disease transmission? How much of it is a ritual? Can the ritual interfere with our patient care? Can the ritual damage our skin? Can the cost of over-use affect health care finances?
Instructions
- Read the Niven op-ed on delays in evidence based care coming to the bedside.
- Read the WHO guidelines, paying special attention to the Glove Use Pyramid.
- Read the Jain study on use/overuse Look at the gloving policy at your workplace.
- Compare the WHO guidelines pyramid, your workplace guidelines, and your personal use of gloves. How do they compare? Would you feel comfortable changing your practice? Is there an area of overuse in the Jain study that may have you look differently at your use?
- Do you see any another area of evidence base care that is possibly delayed?
