Organization Diversity: Disabled People

Organization Diversity: Disabled People

In Chapter 14, Bell notes two misconceptions about people with disabilities. The first is that “people with disabilities prefer to collect disability checks than to work.” The second is that “people with disabilities have lower performance than people without disabilities.”

In the Works for Me video, the viewer is introduced to employees with various disabilities. Along with looking at the concerns many employers express when hiring people with disabilities, this video examines some of the ways employers have accommodated such employees.

While you watch the video, note some of the concerns employers have had and what accommodations, if any, might help alleviate those concerns. Take a few moments to think about the following questions: Does the information provided support the myths explored in the text? Why or why not? For further thought, have you ever had a coworker who had a disability or if you have/had a disability, did you work with others who also have a disability? What was that experience like?
