Support Independence and Wellbeing
Maintaining overall wellbeing requires satisfaction in a number of areas. For each of the following, give three (3) examples of things that may contribute to wellbeing in this aspect of life.
Give three (3) examples of cultural issues or difficulties, and explain how they might impact on wellbeing.
When providing support for clients, it is important to remember that every person has a unique identity and should be able to express their personal needs, preferences and individuality. Where appropriate, they should be able to self-manage their own service delivery.
- What might be the potential impact of imposing your own values and attitudes on a client when it comes to the expression of their personal preferences?
- Describe the possible effects of a person’s social, cultural or spiritual needs on their personal preferences.
- Describe how you would support a client to express their sexual identity and needs in a way that is appropriate to the context of their age or stage of life.
While it is necessary to communicate the importance of using the available support when required, clients should also be encouraged to acknowledge their own strengths and ability to care for themselves.
- Give an example of a personal strength that you have identified or could identify in a client. How might this strength be encouraged so as to support self-care?
- For the above example, what available support, resources or networks might the client also need to be aware of, so as to balance self-care and the need for assistance?
- What information and/or assistance would need to be provided so that the person is aware of and has access to these support services when needed?
What is the role of duty of care when it comes to risk management?
Describe a situation in which a person’s health needs or other requirements for supporting wellbeing may be beyond the boundaries of your own skills, knowledge and/or role. How would you deal with this situation?
Abuse and/or neglect of an older person may be physical, psychological, sexual or financial.
- Give examples of at least five (5) signs of abuse or neglect of an older person.
- How and to whom would you report a suspected case of abuse or violation of human rights?
There are many changes that may occur to a person’s physical, emotional, social, psychological and cognitive states across their lifespan. Pick one (1) of these states, and research it. Describe here how it may develop over the course of a person’s life.
