Sometime in the 1970s another ground-breaking art movement emerged, the art movement known as “conceptual art.” While this movement had its precursors, there was something radically new about it. It changed art, at least in within the art institution, and its influence continues to this day. In this assignment you will get to develop your knowledge of conceptual art, and to identify its uniqueness by contrasting it with Impressionism.
Part 1.
- Drawing on Gompertz, but in your own words, define the art movement known as conceptual art or conceptualism. What are the key ideas and styles of this movement? Provide at least one or two examples of conceptual art.
Part 2.
- Contrast conceptual art with Impressionism. What are the key differences between these two movements, and what are the similarities (if any)? Lastly, discuss which movement you prefer and why.
