From Theory to Practice:   Quality Improvement Group Presentation – Case Study

Students will apply concepts, methods, and strategies presented in this course to a real time quality improvement opportunity identified in their current adult med/surgical clinical experience.

By Week 5, students select their groups based on their Strength Finders analysis and post each group members name on the Wiki. By Week 6, each group selects one problem identified during their current adult med surgical clinical and the group leader submits the selected problem to their section faculty by email for approval. By the end of Week 7, the section faculty emails group leader with decision to either proceed or revise. Group presentation order will be assigned by section faculty and will occur in Weeks 11 and Week 12.

For our group project we would like to examine fatigue in nursing. Specifically, we want to see how breaks throughout the day and extra shifts being given could affect, not only, quality, but safety as well.

Group Assignment:

  1. Summarize the case 1-slide
  2. Root cause analysis based on fishbone diagram and identification of clinical problem to be addressed-(place your RCA on the slide and summarize 2 slides)
  3. Plan/Strategies: 2 evidence-based suggestions for specific interventions targeted at specific issue and rationales-( Identify the issue you are going address (1 slide)- this can be found on the “bones” of the fishbone; 2 suggestions to improve the issue you identified to prevent and sustain the improvement (2 slides) WITH EVIDENCE (make sure your references are within the last five years 2016-2021.  Total of 3 slides
  4. Evaluation Plan:  quality measures associated with the issue you have identified -how will you evaluate each strategy to determine if it was effective (2 slides-one for each strategy) This should be a plan you could implement to evaluate the strategy.

Group Presentation Requirements:

  • Limit 10 slides
  • 10 minutes for presentation.
  • 5 minutes for questions (each student will ask one question of an assigned group (i. e. Student A will be assigned to ask one question of Group 1).

Submission:

  • Submit the PPT as PDF through Blackboard by the due date per syllabus
