Assessment 2: Advocacy Presentation and Discussion
Advocating for human rights in the context of health
Total marks 30 (weighting 30%) (1000 words, plus participation in online group discussion of 200 word minimum each, and 500-word evidence of action)
Task rationale: This task allows you to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained in the course to use available data and other relevant information to develop an advocacy approach to a public health issue that has a human rights component.
Task description:
Part A: For this assessment you need to prepare and present a proposal for an advocacy action or campaign that advocates for human rights as they relate to one health issue for a given population (The health issue and population will be allocated in class in the first three weeks of trimester). Your presentation should consist of no more than 1000 words.
In your presentation you must include:
- The issue and population
- Justification of your choice of issue
- The alternative actions (or campaigns currently in place)
- The action you have chosen
- Justification of your chosen action
- Details regarding how to take that action (including any relevant URLs)
- Reference list (not included in the word count)
How to Guide:
- You should base this assessment on the case study population and health issue/determinant identified in class. Using the advocacy framework that we review together in class, identify a relevant action using an advocacy tool. Justify the use of this tool and your target audience. Consider its fit with current campaigns or actions in place. Consider stakeholders in the issue.
- You might like to structure your presentation using the following headings:
The issue and population
Describe the issue and population
Justification of your choice of issue
Justify this issue and why you are addressing it over other issues. Consider the background of the population, issue, stakeholders and comment on relevant issues of power, social structure, equity and peace or conflict.
The alternative actions (or campaigns currently in place)
Research what is currently going on in this area so you can give careful consideration to whether you want to build on something that is existing or whether you feel you need to create something new to fill a gap or correct a problem with existing campaigns.
The action you have chosen
Describe the advocacy tool and action you have chosen.
Justification of your chosen action
Consider timing and the current state of affairs. Justify your choice of action. What are the strengths and limitations of the approach you have proposed and how does this relate to the literature/research? What evidence is there regarding similar campaigns/actions or issues?
Details regarding how to take that action
Include any instructions, names, addresses, URLs that people might require to undertake this action.
