Airways Operation and Design Assessment

Airways Operation and Design Assessment

Assessment Description

In this assignment you will be required to review a case study of an accident/incident investigation that involved CNS/ATM which you will need to critically analyse the actions of the air traffic controller and/or the air navigation service provider organisation. Students must review an air traffic management aspect of the investigation. The accident to be reviewed is:

Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Investigation number: AO-2008-050 Controlled Flight into Terrain – Piper PA31T, VH-TNP, near Benalla, Victoria, 28 July 2004 https://www.atsb.gov.au/publications/investigation_reports/2004/aair/aair200402797.aspx

Students should focus on Section 1.17 – Organisational and Management Information, as well as Section 2.3 Air Traffic Management. Note that other sections of the ATSB investigation report will also need to be read to undertake this assignment.

NOTE: For the purposes of this assignment, assume that the reader knows the Benalla accident and you therefore do not need to provide a detailed description of the accident. You do not need to include the investigation report as an appendix to the assignment.

How to Undertake a Case Study Review

To effectively undertake a case study review requires:

  • Understand the accident being reviewed
  • Appreciate the context (e.g., time, country, technology, etc.) within which the paper was written
  • Identify a particular argument/premise/position/stance in relation to the accident (e.g., to support the investigation report or to contradict the investigation report, etc.)
  • Provide sufficient evidence to support the position adopted
  • Provide sound reasons to discount contradictory evidence

How to Structure a Case Study Review

There are many ways to structure a case study review. Some elements are common to all case study and headings should be used to structure a case study assignment. Sub-headings are also an option that can assist with signposting, however consideration should be given to the formatting of headings. The type of formatting will denote the level of the heading (i.e., centred, bold, italics, capitalised, etc. will denote the level of the heading ). Key sections are:

  • Title – should not be labelled as title, but should be well considered and appear on the title page and at the top of the assignment.
  • Introduction – provides a brief context for the assignment and an overview of the structure that will be presented within the assignment. By the end of the introduction the reader should know what the central argument/premise of the assignment is.
  • Discussion – where you argue that your position/premise is right; where the arguments are made with appropriate referencing, to substantiate the position you are proposing.
  • Conclusion – a summary of the case study review; does not introduce any new material.
  • Reference List – a list of the references cited within the assignment; note this is NOT a bibliography.

Ensure that you provide appropriate signposting within the assignment. That is, guide the reader through the assignment and the arguments being proposed.

All non-original content must be appropriately referenced, so as to avoid plagiarism. This includes direct quotations, as well as paraphrasing the work of another.
