Assignment 2: Case Study Assignment: Assessing the Head, Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Throat
D.R. 8-years-old Hispanic male CC- cough HPI- Cough, fatigue, and runny nose x 4-5 days accompanied by right ear pain which started yesterday. He reports throat is sore 2/10 pain, worse when swallowing, right ear pain which is “bad” 3/10 pain, cough is “watery and gurgly”, and clear secretions from nose. He reports the cough gets worse at night. He reports the OTC cough medicine his mother gave him made him feel a little better and then symptoms returned. Denies chest tightness or pain, shortness of breath, thick, colored phlegm, fever, headache, problems with his eye.
With regard to the case study you were assigned:
Review this week’s Learning Resources and consider the insights they provide.
- Consider what history would be necessary to collect from the patient.
- Consider what physical exams and diagnostic tests would be appropriate to gather more information about the patient\’s condition. How would the results be used to make a diagnosis?
- Identify at least five possible conditions that may be considered in a differential diagnosis for the patient
- Create documentation or an episodic/focused note in SOAP format about the patient in the case study to which you were assigned.
- Provide evidence from the literature to support diagnostic tests that would be appropriate for your case.
- List five different possible conditions for the patient\’s differential diagnosis, and justify why you selected each.
