How to Proceed

  1. View the following videos:

A & S. (2017). Cross Cultural Differences in Body Language by Image Matters Asia CC.

The Lavin Agency Speakers Bureau. (2014). Leadership Speaker Erin Meyer: Low Context vs. High Context Societies.

Ensure that you take notes on some of the important body language and gesture differences that are described in the video as well as the key points that differentiate low context and high context cultures.

  1. View one of the episodes of Dragon’s Den through the following link:

  1. Write a 500-word essay to describe how the sales person in Dragon’s Den used body language to make their sales pitch. Describe what you would do to sell the same or similar product in a different cultural context such as Asia, South America or Europe. Your essay should include the following:
    • A brief summary of the verbal and non-verbal messages conveyed in the Dragon’s Den presentation and whether or not they are effective.
    • An explanation of what is required to adapt the message to a high context culture assuming that Dragon’s Den targets a low context audience.
  2. Submit your report through the Assignment 1: Successful Business Communicationdropbox in UM Learn.

You will be assessed in accordance with following rubric:

Clear understanding of the differences between high context and low context cultures.

Thorough analysis of how to adapt the sales message to a high context culture audience.

Essay is easy to follow and contains only minor spelling and grammar errors.

Good appraisal of verbal and non-verbal cues.

Some understanding of the differences between high context and low context cultures.

Basic understanding of how to adapt the sales message to a high context culture audience.

Essay is easy to follow and contains some grammar and spelling errors.

Limited appraisal of verbal and non-verbal cues.

Little understanding of the differences between high context and low context cultures.

Essay covers a superficial adaptation of the sales message and contains some major spelling and grammar errors that detract from understanding.

No analysis and poor understanding of verbal and non-verbal cues.

Paper is difficult to understand or largely incomplete with no noteworthy analysis.
