Write a 1,200-1,500-word essay that describes the characteristics and roles you hope to embody as a counselor and the counselor dispositions that you want to bring with you. You may write in the first person for this assignment.   1. Read “Integrating Care for People With Co-Occurring Alcohol and Other Drug, Medical, and Mental Health Conditions” by Sterling, Chi, and Hinman. This week, you studied various theories and models of addiction and learned about the human body’s reaction to substances. With all the scientific knowledge we now have about addiction, why is there more than one etiology of addiction? How can an addiction counselor effectively contribute to the treatment of a client working with other healthcare professionals during their recovery process?
  2. In preparation for this week’s assignment, review substance use disorders and process addictions. How do process addictions differ from substance use disorders? How does treatment vary between process addictions and substance use disorders?
  3. Explain the importance of a counselor having an understanding of tolerance and withdrawal. What potential issues could arise if the counselor did not have this knowledge? Provide at least one example in your response. Additionally, discuss how a substance use disorder could mimic and/or co-occur with a variety of neurological, medical, and psychological disorders as discussed in the Differential Diagnoses sections of the Substance Use Disorders chapter in the DSM.
  4. In many states, marijuana is now legal for certain medical purposes. What are your state’s laws regarding marijuana? Identify some clinical issues that may now present themselves because of this. What if you have a client who is addicted to alcohol and narcotics, who is also using marijuana to help with chronic pain? How might you address this situation?

Understanding tolerance and withdrawal is important to a counselor for it plays a major role in designing a diagnosis procedure, treatment plan, and in the detection of substance use disorders. If a counselor lacks an understanding of either tolerance or withdrawal concept, this creates an ill-conceived treatment plan, a life threatening treatment plan, a situation where clients lack knowledge about the results of withdrawal, and clients’ unawareness of any serious medical condition that would occur out of substance abuse (Murdock, 2015).
