What are the Key Differences between Qualitative and Quantitative Research?

According to (Hollingsworth & Fassinger, 2002), qualitative and quantitative research differ. In research, qualitative and quantitative research can be used together, and this is termed as a “mixed research method.” In a study, quantitative research focuses on information about the number of students and percentages in terms of response rate and participation. In contrast, qualitative research data is descriptive and is based on the researchers’ observations. In this article, qualitative research seeks to understand human behavior from the researcher’s perspective. In contrast, quantitative research seeks to discover facts about the research problem, “The role of faculty mentors in the research training of counseling psychology doctoral students (Hollingsworth & Fassinger, 2002).”  Also, qualitative data is analyzed by themes based on the informant’s descriptions. In contrast, quantitative data is analyzed through numerical comparisons, percentages, and statistical inferences. In this study, quantitative data is gathered through a survey booklet with scales. Also included in the quantitative research is a demographic form (Hollingsworth & Fassinger, 2002). To collect qualitative data, paired observations regarding the study variables was used; for example, when comparing student and faculty mentor responses.
