Brief description of assessment task  

The critical essay should respond to either the following question or statement with detailed study of 1-3 relevant examples and theoretical analysis and discussion.

Question:

Is the world media becoming more similar or dissimilar?—Critical reflection on globalisation and glocalisation from a media perspective

Statement:

America’s global media and culture hegemony remains strong. But it is increasingly being contested by the ‘rise of the rest’, especially with emerging media flows and powers from Asian countries with old histories and new global aspirations.

The critical essay needs to elaborate your argument for the given question or statement by analysing appropriate examples. You need to focus on 1-3 examples to give in-depth and nuanced analysis rather than briefly mapping many examples.

You need to refer to the theories, arguments, concepts and evidence found in the unit of study readings (required and recommended) and your own research on the topic to support the development of your argument.

The essay should consist of the following elements:

  1. A cover page that lists your name, student ID, date of submission, and total word count.
  2. An introduction that briefly outlines your essay structure and key argument/s.
  3. A main body that elaborates your argument by analysing appropriate examples and cases to support your argument. You need to refer to the theories, arguments, concepts and evidence found in the unit of study readings (required and recommended) and your own research on the topic to back up the development of your argument. The main body could include sections with section titles as needed.
  4. A conclusion that briefly summarises your essay and points to the significance of your argument.
