Mr. Ashwan has recently been appointed as the Head of the HR department in MEGARM Co. ltd, a large multinational company engaged in the business of manufacturing high quality garments meant exclusively for the export market. The company has a number of subsidiaries which are scattered around the country.

At the management meeting held one week ago, the CEO has requested the new Head of HR to carry out an audit of the training procedures at one of the subsidiaries of the company which has been subjected to some serious complaints. The main ones are: late delivery, poor quality, absenteeism, low productivity.

No sooner said than done. Mr S. Laloo has submitted his report which includes the following salient points:

  • The quality of staff at this subsidiary compares favourably with others
  • New workers are sent directly to work in the factory and are trained in the normal work of the plant by experienced workers „on the job‟
  • Whenever there is need of new tasks, the supervisors are present to do the coaching
  • In some sections such as management accounting, production and marketing only qualified staff are employed. If there is any problem the manager will step in to provide counselling.

Required:

  1. Based on the case study discuss the disadvantages of the training methods used at the level of the subsidiary. (12 marks)
  2. Discuss other methods which can be used, including potential advantages and disadvantages? (13 marks)
