Introduction to Community Services
Assessment 2: Reflective ESSAY (20%)
Word Count: 800-1000 words
Students are required to write a reflective essay on discussions, learning, group processes & activities in class & group tutorial.
Students are encouraged to take weekly notes in Week 1 -Week 6, to assist them in choosing what they would like to reflect on from classroom discussions. You must reflect on a minimum of 4 of the following reflection topics (200-250 words each). You must choose at least 1 topic from each section. For the 4th topic, you can choose another topic of your own choice as relevant to the content in Weeks 1-6.
Section A: Reflections on the theoretical foundations of community services work.
- Different concepts of community, and their relevance to community work.
- Reflection and analysis of the social determinants of health
- Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and the implications for your role as a community worker
Section B: Reflections on welfare, power, disempowerment and equity
- The links between globalisation and community services work
- Reasons and examples of the relevance of the theories of Karl Marx and Max Weber in present day Australian society
- The implications of neoliberalism for the community services sector.
- Reflection on Australian society and inequality, and how this relates to community services work
Section C: The purpose and nature of Australian community services work
- The various roles of community services workers, and your reflections on your own career path.
- Reflections and discussion on the main community sector agencies in Australia
Your essay should include at least 4 (scholarly) journal articles that you have read and at least two Taylor (2015) textbook references. Use APA 7 Referencing.
