Background:

One key objective for PR and Communications practitioners is to earn favourable publicity for their organizations. To accomplish this goal, practitioners must:

  • Understand who the relevant journalists and influencers are for their industry
  • Create and maintain media lists
  • Develop strong relationships with key influencers and journalists
  • Create and distribute relevant, high-quality media materials
  • Monitor media coverage to assess public opinion and effectiveness of campaigns

This assignment focuses on two aspects of media relations: media monitoring and reporting, and the development of an appropriate media list.

Assignment:

Part 1 – Watch interview with Jay Ali, where he discusses his challenges as an actor, but also some of the challenges that exist within media regarding representation and diversity (Instructions below).

Part 2 – Based on your understanding and findings, create a targeted media list

Part 1 Instructions

GRADED TOTAL: 10%

  • Create a response between 150-350 words.
  • Use your own personal understanding on the matter (don’t limit yourself, if you have a personal story that resonates with the interview, feel free to add it).
  • It’s a personal reflection, but include as much course content as you can in your discussion. For example, how do you feel Jay’s experience on Daredevil could relate to the target audience.
  • This will require some external informal research. Don’t need to read academic journals, but do some extra research on who the target audience is for Marvel and also for Daredevil. Do some digging on the previous portrayal of South Asians in North American television
  • How does this help the public relations/marketing of the show, Marvel and the super hero genre?
  • Grades based on ability to follow instructions above, as well as spelling, grammar and formulation of thoughts.

Part 2 -Instructions

Create a media list of 5 to 15 journalists you consider to be particularly relevant for this company and its key issues. Remember, the best media relations efforts are highly targeted – sending media releases or story pitches using a shotgun approach is a waste of everyone’s time. Select your journalists based on their areas of interest (their “beat”); the media for which they write (is your target audience their target audience?); their previous work. This will require some research! Your media list must be national in scope (all regions must be covered, either through national media or a mix of regional media, or both).
