Discuss how the condition can be prevented, treated or cured.

  • related this to the functioning of the system and how it is improved or restored.

Use scientific research and presentation skills appropriate to biology.

  • used visual aids appropriately, e.g. use of PPT; labelling and referencing of figures according to biological convention.
  • used referencing skills, demonstrating a broad range of subject matter.

Give a 10 minute presentation on condition that affects either the respiratory or circulatory system.

  • Produce a 500 word summary of the presentation in essay format.

For the presentation you should include all of the following:

  1. Use relevant diagrams to explain the normal functioning of either the respiratory or circulatory system.
  2. Relate particular structures to function, which enable the organ / tissue / cells to be well adapted – Choose at least three structures that you can relate to their functions within your chosen system
  3. Identify a relevant condition that affects either the respiratory or circulatory systems.- Choose a condition that is as specific as possible. Make sure you choose a condition and not a treatment or symptom e.g. a pacemaker is a treatment; a heart attack is symptomatic of underlying conditions.
  4. Describe how the named condition is acquired (e.g. genetic, environmental, etc). – There may be more than one reason, which is fine.
  5. Describe how the condition affects the normal functioning of different components of the system. This is important. You must be able to compare how the system functions normally with what happens under your named condition E.g. Valves prevent backflow of blood in veins. In varicose veins the leaflets of the valves do not meet properly and cause pooling of blood – Do not just produce a list of symptoms, try to relate them to how the system is affected.
  6. Identify and evaluate any possible prevention, treatment and / or cure
