Writing Current Event Paper

For this paper, students are to write an essay (at least 750 words long) that relates to one of the sociological theories reviewed in this course: symbolic interactionism, class conflict theory, or functional analysis. The cover page, reference page, and all citations must adhere to current APA formatting standards.

Complete the following for the Current Event Paper:

Locate a current event article (published no longer than six months ago) that addresses a social problem of the student’s choice. The article can be from a local newspaper, popular magazine, or through an online search such as Yahoo, Google CNN, etc. The article selected cannot to be a research article.

In the first half of the paper, students are to simply summarize the main points of the event discussed in the article. This is a time to provide the “facts” of the social problem or event, utilizing sociological perspectives or understandings presented in the textbook. One supportive primary APA citation should be included in this section, which should be approximately 375 words long. Students should paraphrase material rather than include a direct quotation.

In the second half of the paper, students are to objectively analyze the main points of the event, focusing on one of the three main sociological theories reviewed in the course (symbolic interactionism, class conflict theory, or functional analysis). Students should use information about sociology gained from the course and the textbook (outside scholarly sources are also allowed) to come to a balanced appraisal of the article’s assertions and significance. Personal views are allowed but must be supported with scholarly evidence. One supportive primary APA citation should be included in this section, which should be approximately 375 words long.
