Topic: Plastic Collective Sustainability-related Strategy

  1. Background to the Case (Plastic Collective)
    • Background of Plastic Collective (PC).

Describe briefly some background of the Plastic Collective firm.

1.2  importance of the company in the broad (international business landscape and specific (Australian) context.

Explain the importance of the business (Plastic Collective) not only from the point of view of environmental sustainability but also the contribution of PC to an economy.


  1. Demonstration of the body of knowledge
    • Plastic Collective sustainability-related strategy.

In this section you should (a) analyze the sustainability-related strategy used by Plastic Collective and (b) identify the sustainability-related issues (relevant to the various stakeholders). This second point refers to an assessment of the external environment where you can arrive at the identification of the issues you will address in the third criterion of the rubric. You may want to use the article: Environment analysis for SSM by Edward Stead pg 65 Table 3.1

  • Sustainability strategy starts with a description of how the vision and mission of the company includes (or does not include) sustainability concerns. Then, analyze the strategy(ies) the company has used to achieve the goals and accomplish its vision and mission. Under strategies you may refer to collaborative relationships for example (see Fig 3.6 pg 82 reading in session 7 Environmental Analysis for SSM. Also discuss the various goals (related to sustainability) and the extent the company has achieved them. What has impeded the company to achieve them fully?

Other strategies have been referred to as ‘green’  (ecological) for e.g. the article ‘greening’ the marketing mix… by Leonidou, Katsikeas and Morgan) , and a more comprehensive strategy that incorporates the social aspect. You may want to see the examples of firms that are described in the article B2B branding in emerging markets:…by Sheth and Sinha pg 83-85.

Analyze the leadership and discuss whether it has developed a sustainable organizational culture. Provide evidence and illustrate every time you arrive at a conclusion. There is no point in just mentioning: the company has pursued a ‘greening’ strategy, or an ‘innovation strategy’,  for example. Explain and illustrate to justify your conclusion.

  • Identification of Sustainability-related issues faced by PC.

This section should end with an identification of sustainability-related issues (three minimum) that Plastic Collective faces and that need to be addressed (in criterion / section 3).  I DO NOT expect one line or a bullet point with the ‘name’ of the issue. Explain the issues.

You may use the article that describes the issues and opportunities in the MSCI ESG rating and also chapter 5 Ethics, Social responsibility and sustainable development (pp 210 -216) in Samson and Daft textbook : Management: Asia Pacific. You can review the issues in the Appendix of the journal article by Flammer, C. (2015). Does corporate social responsibility lead to superior financial performance? A regression discontinuity approach. In Management Science 61(11):2549-2568.


  1. Explanation of the case and synthesis with the theory
    • identify and briefly explain three alternative strategies to address the issue.

In this section, you should take the issues you identified in the previous sections and briefly explain three alternative strategies to address the issues. You may wan to use the article by Kumar and Christodoulopoulou: Sustainability and branding: an integrated perspective. Specially concentrate on the two top boxes of the Fig 2 in p 10 namely strategy and operation. Remember at this point you only describe the future three alternative. You may also want to use chapter 5 and 6 Competitive and Corporate strategies from the textbook by  Edward Daft.

  1. Analysis of the situation

4.1. Strategy implementation: In this section, you must develop the strategy implementation in terms of planning, organizing, leading and controlling. For this section, I recommend you review the content in the chapters from the prescribed management textbook. Specifically chapter 1 The changing world of management by Samson and Daft session 7. And chapters from Edward Stead’s textbook chapter 2, 3, 4, 7 (choosing and implementing SSM strategies), and 8 (leadership).

4.1.1 Planning: One important element of Planning is to establish objectives therefore, I expect you to indicate objectives for the issues identified in an earlier section. They can address one or two issues only.

4.1.2 Organizing:  Be specific as to how you plan the organization of the activities and tasks.

4.1.3 Leading: Proposed who whould be in charge of what tasks that you suggested in the strategy

4.1.4 Controlling: Describe how you are going to control and make sure you are progressing in the strategy implementation. What are the indicators you will look at in what period.
