EBIE3103: INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

Question 1

The field of industrial engineering combines the knowledge and skills from several fields of

science such as technical sciences, economics and human sciences. These can also be supported with skills in information science. Industrial engineering includes knowledge of those sciences in an effort to increase process productivity, achieve product quality and ensure labour safety. There are two stages in industrial and system engineering. The first stage is called human system activities and it refers to the physical work which people carry out. Meanwhile, the second stage is called the management control system, and it relates to the planning procedures for measuring and controlling all activities within an organisation. Your assignment must include the following:

  1. Look around your workplace. Can you identify areas that are related to industrial engineering? Explain in your report.
  2. Explain the activities in your organisation that are related to human system activities and the management control system.
  3. Develop a proposal to improve the activities related to human system activities and the management control system in your organisation.
  4. Include relevant references in your report.

Decision-making can be sophisticated or complicated. This is why it is important for us to learn a few decision-making techniques. These techniques can help us to produce better decisions. There are seven steps to be taken in analysing business problems so that effective decisions are made. There are several types of models used in business, especially in manufacturing. Models are an abstraction of the real world. These are useful in making decisions for two reasons. Firstly, they can reduce complex problems into simple forms. Secondly, they provide a way to apprehend the impact of a decision before it is made. This includes physical model, schematic model and mathematical model. Your assignment must include the following:

  1. Discuss the importance of decision-making in manufacturing. Explain in your report.
  2. Identify and select a problem in your workplace and apply the seven steps in analysing business problems.
  3. Develop a proposal to your management explaining that they can produce better decision. Choose one model for your proposal, either physical model, schematic model or mathematical model. Provide few examples that occurs in your workplace to better convince them.
  4. Include relevant references in your report.
