Mechanical Processes for MSW Essay

Mechanical Processes for MSW Essay

This unit has discussed the mechanical processes for solid waste (e.g., conveyance, shredding).

For this assignment, compose an essay that addresses the prompts below:

  • Describe best practices for the mechanical processing of solid waste.
  • Explain best practices for shredding.
  • Elaborate on the environmental benefits of mechanical processing.
  • Using a search engine of your choice, conduct a search using the following terms: high-horsepower hammermill solid waste shredder. Find a manufacturer of a shredder. Select one shredder from the manufacturer’s inventory, and provide the model number and operating specifications, such as the horsepower (i.e., kW), the capacity (i.e., units of tons per hour), and the size of materials that it can process. Discuss why you selected the shredder, and describe the shredder’s pros and cons.

In your paper, limit the number of direct quotations that are taken from outside sources. The majority of your paper should be composed of your own thoughts and paraphrased information.

Make certain that your essay meets the criteria listed below.

  • Include a title page.
  • Provide an introduction.
  • Your paper must be at least three full pages in length, not counting the title page and references page.
  • Your references page should include at least three sources, one of which should be the course textbook, one of which should be a peer-reviewed source from the CSU Online Library, and one of which should be the hammermill shredder webpage.
  • Please adhere to APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment.

Describe best practices for the mechanical processing of solid waste

The best practices for mechanical processing of solid waste include composting, landfills, composting and animal feeding. Waste Recycling is the recovery operation where the waste materials are reprocessed into products, substance or materials whether for original use or any other purpose. Recycling can also be in form of composting and biodegrading the waste such as the garden waste and food. Recycling is so important as it prevents pollution, reduced gas emissions, saves energy, saves money and reduces the amount of waste which leads to landfills. Another practice is combustion or incineration which involves burning the solid waste at high temperatures thus converting the waste into gaseous and residue products. Composting is also another practice where the process takes the organic waste and turns it into nutrient rich food for the plants. This practice is mostly used in organic farming by allowing the organic materials to sit at the same place for months until it’s decomposed by the microbes.

Explain best practices for shredding

There are many shredding practices but not all are created equal. Some of the practices are ideal and simple for everyday usage on paperwork but not good for sensitive documents. Other practices are the best for destroying classified or highly sensitive documents thus considered overkill for everyday paperwork. The best practices for shredding include the strip-cut shredding and cross-cut shredding.  Strip-cut shredding is a basic method for cutting paper into long parallel strips making it common and economical destruction method. Through this practice, the long strips can be reconstructed carefully for confidential document restoration. Cross-cut shredding is the practice which utilizes horizontal and vertical blades that’s cuts the paper into diamond and squire pieces. This practice is able to cut one paper into many pieces approximately like 10X pieces more than what the strip-cut shredders can produce….End of Preview….
