Olympics Case Study – Team Acquisition

Olympics Case Study – Team Acquisition

It is June 2014 and the Canadian Olympic Committee (sponsor) has hired you as the project manager to start the process of building the core team that will manage all of the logistics associated with Canada’s Olympic resources when they leave for Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The core project team has been identified and comprises of thirteen individuals who have been pre-assigned to this project. In order to meet the CoC policy/mandate for national representation on its project teams, each of the pre-assigned project team members comes from one of each province and territory.

The project has been provided with a budget to hire up to an additional five (5) project team members based on the project team’s needs. These additional team members can come from any province.

The Canadian Olympic Committee has indicated that there will be conflict, as some of the representatives from larger provinces feel that they should have more members on the project team and they see that a lack of representation on the project team as a major issue.

You have budget to hire up to an additional 5 team members depending on the needs of the project. As such you will have to resolve this conflict with the members of the project team.

1. In order for you to have an effective team prior to leaving for Rio, describe:

  • the steps you will take so that you can acquire the additional 5 project team members
  • the steps that you will take to manage the conflict that will surely ensue as a result of limited resources and funding

2. What recommendations would you make to the Canadian Olympic Committee (sponsor) to minimize this type of conflict from occurring in future years.

Note: this is not about recommendations you would make to future project managers, but rather, what actions you would want to sponsor to specifically undertake to minimize this conflict from occurring in the future.
